Is Dairy Actually Good For You?

From a young age we are taught to drink our milk as it is great for bone health and adds some much-needed vitamins into our diets. This statement stands very true for when we are in infancy, but the lines get slightly blurred as we get older, especially when we start adding it to coffee.

We have always been sure of milk as a nutritious addition to any diet until the last decade or so where several studies have pointed towards dairy in general being less advantageous than we would have hoped. In some cases, dairy has been found to be quite dangerous for human consumption. In the below, we will look at the finding from the good and bad camp to try and understand if dairy should still be a part of our diets.

Positive Aspects

There is no denying that dairy products are some of the best products available, the array of different cheese available would be difficult to live without for a lot of people. As milk is generally the main form of dairy consumption, let's look at milk for the proposed benefits of dairy. Milk contains protein, potassium, phosphorus, iodine, a huge amount of vitamin B12 and of course the star of the show, calcium. Some benefits include:

  1. Bone health - the calcium in milk greatly aids bone density and structure. While it is very possible to get the required calcium intake in other forms, it is difficult to seamlessly match the amount of calcium supplied in milk.
  2. Cognitive development - mainly thanks to the iodine contained in milk, it can aid in supporting healthy cognitive function. While milk won't make you immune to neurological illness in any way, it is good to know that you are getting the required iodine to support healthy brain function.
  3. Metabolism - Vitamin B12 is a great proponent to aid with a healthy metabolism.

Negative Aspects

This is where some controversy comes into play. Some less surprising than others, but all worthy of noting, depending on the role that dairy plays in the recipes in your diet:

  • Fat - the high concentration of saturated fat and cholesterol in milk is of great concern for heart disease experts. This is, however, dependent on the quantity of milk consumed in your diet. If you are at any risk of heart disease, it is recommended to lower your dairy intake to the minimum.
  • Lactose intolerance - being lactose intolerant is no new thing, but you may be lactose intolerant without realizing it. Experts estimate that upwards of 60% of the world's population have some form of lactose malabsorption. This can present itself in many ways, from simple irritable bowl syndrome all the way to severe allergies. If you find yourself having the odd case of IBS at times, it may very well be lactose malabsorption.
  • Cancer - The current standing research and evidence shows that excessive consumption of dairy products can be linked to 50% increase in breast and prostate cancer. It is difficult to take this research as absolute, as more long-term studies do need to be completed on the matter. It is however worth noting that an excess of dairy may increase your chances of getting some nature of cancer.

Should We Have Dairy
